Development of the Electronically Controlled Hydraulic Cooling Fan System

A new engine cooling fan system has been developed, in which the fan is driven by a hydraulic pump and motor and controlled electronically by a computer. By utilizing the hydrostatic power under precise control, the fan generates not only high airflow volume but also optimum flow rate for the various engine conditions. Also in this system, a relatively high efficiency is gained because the clearance between the tip of the fan blade and a shroud designed to be short, thanks to the installation of the fan on the radiator. As the result of these functions, the following features have been obtained which are superior to conventional fan systems like a engine-driven fan with fluid coupling or an electric-motor fan. Regeneration Capability of Wall-Flow Monolith Diesel Particulate Filter with Electric Heater

A regeneration of a wall-flow monolith filter with a heater unit was examined. In the preliminary test the regeneration showed unsatisfactory results, back pressure level increased and filter melting occured. Reversing the gas flow through the filter during the regeneration process and initiating particulate combustion from the outlet side of the filter was found to be a solution for the filter melting problem in particular. This “reverse regeneration” system, which we call RRG, compared with a conventional regeneration (CRG) was examined with a model reactor and applied on an actual vehicle on a chassis dynamometer. Tests confirmed that filter melting was prevented, however cracking of the filter could not be prevented with an RRG.

Proposal of New Criteria and Test Methods for the Dynamic Performance of ATF

Recently in the world, many modifications and improvements have been taking place in automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in order to get more excellent performance and durability of automatic transmission. The most important criterion for the improvement of ATF is a superior friction characteristic. To consider the performance of ATF, we have investigated the correlation of criteria between actual vehicle tests and bench-scale tests (e.g. SAE#2 Friction Test). And it was proved that conventional criteria and test methods for bench-scale tests were not enough to give best prediction of actual vehicle performance especially for shift quality, anti-shudder performance and static torque capacity which were regarded as of major importance for the development. Based on the findings, we have considered new criteria and test methods for the frictional characteristics, and specific requirements for ATF have been proposed from the standpoint of actual vehicle performance.

Numerical Study of Flow Cavitation

With the progress of super computers in recent years, a number of studies on “Computational Fluid Dynamics” (CFD) have been carried out, and various schemes for Navier-Stokes equations have been presented. Similar methods have also been applied to automotive engineering - aerodynamics, for exampre - in order to determine flow phenomena. In this paper, the application of numerical simulations to the flow cavitation that occurs in some part of orifices in the vehicle hydraulic system, will be discussed. Authors have developed a CFD program for the clarification of flow phenomena in such orifices. Using the relationship between calculated results and measured results of noise levels in such orifices, a new method for estimation of the occurrence of flow cavitation has also been developed. As a result, a new orifice configuration capable of preventing the cavitation has been designed.

Hybrid System Development for High-Performance All Wheel Drive Vehicle

The original Toyota Hybrid System (THS) was installed in the Prius and was introduced in 1997 as the world's first mass-produced hybrid passenger car. Since then, THS has been continuously improved. In 2003 THS-II (marketed as Hybrid Synergy Drive [HSD]), was installed in a new larger Prius. In 2006 HSD was installed in a Rear Wheel Drive Vehicle: the LEXUS GS450h. This system achieved both 4.5-liter class power performance and compact class fuel economy with outstanding emissions performance. In 2007, this system is expanded to a mechanical all-wheel-drive(AWD) in the LEXUS LS600hL(with new V8 engine). This paper will explain this hybrid system which achieved both V12 class power performance and mid-size class fuel economy, while meeting the most stringent emission standard SULEV as a full-size vehicle.

Research of the DI Diesel Spray Characteristics at High Temperature and High Pressure Ambient

In order to clarify the diesel fuel spray characteristics inside the cylinder, we developed two novel techniques, which are preparation of same level of temperature and pressure ambient as inside cylinder and quantitative measurement of vapor concentration. The first one utilizes combustion-type constant-volume chamber (inner volume 110cc), which allows 5 MPa and 873K by igniting the pre-mixture (n-pentane and air) with two spark plugs. In the second technique, TMPD vapor concentration is measured by using Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence method (LIEF). The concentration is compensated by investigation of the influence of ambient pressure (from 3 to 5 MPa) and temperature (from 550 to 900 K) on TMPD fluorescence intensity. By using two techniques, we investigated the influence of nozzle hole diameter, injection pressure and ambient condition on spray characteristics.

Reduction of HC Emission for Passenger Car Diesel Engine

Analysis to clarify the influence of diesel nozzle hole specifications on HC emission is performed by using a single cylinder engine. The total nozzle hole area and the number of holes are the investigation parameters. The experimental results show that HC emission under low-load condition becomes higher with not only the increase of the total nozzle hole area but also the decrease of it. The reason for the increase of HC emission with small hole area is that the longer spray tip penetration of the pilot injection accelerates the spray diffusion in the cylinder, and the over-lean fuel-air mixture areas become easily formed.

Toyota's New Six-Speed Automatic Transmission AB60E for RWD Vehicles

Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new six-speed automatic transmission AB60E for longitudinal front engine rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles. This transmission development was aimed at an improvement of power performance and fuel economy, while achieving a lightweight, compact package and a high torque capacity. In order to achieve this target, a high-capacity ultra-flat torque converter, a highly-rigid transmission case, and an ATF warmer with a valve to switch ATF circuits to an air-cooled ATF cooler have been newly developed. Moreover, a new transmission mode control logic “TOW / HAUL” has been developed to improve power performance and driveability during trailer towing. This automatic transmission has adopted the same gear train and hydraulic control system as the conventional six-speed automatic transmission A760E. This paper describes the structure, major features and performance of the transmission in detail.

Toyota's World First 8-Speed Automatic Transmission for Passenger Cars

TOYOTA has developed the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission (AA80E) for front-engine, rear-drive passenger cars. The AA80E developed for high-torque engines raises the level of power performance and fuel efficiency. To meet the size requirements needed for mounting in a passenger car application, an 8-speed geartrain, torque converter, transmission case and hydraulic control device were all newly-developed. Furthermore, the AA80E has benefited from technical developments to achieve an extremely high level of quietness and shifting performance. In this paper, the details of the AA80E are introduced.

Large Eddy Simulation of Spray Injection to Turbulent Duct Flow from a Slit Injector

The behavior of spray injections to turbulent duct flows from a slit injector for direct-injection gasoline engines was investigated using a combination of large eddy simulation (LES) and Lagrangian discrete droplet model (DDM). As a result, diffusion of droplets in stronger turbulent flows was observed at a later stage of the injection. Moreover, we compared calculation and experimental results by generating a pseudo-particle image from the calculation result.

Toyota's New Integrated Drive Power Control System

Toyota has developed a new system, which uses integrated control of powertrain by PowerTrain Management (PTM), in order to improve driving comfort and reliability. This system is currently in use on Lexus's new LS460. This system is composed of 4 parts: a generation part, a mediating part, a modification part and a distribution part. In each part, processes are based on drive power and torque. In the generation part, requests from a programmed model driver, Driving Support Computer and Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) are generated and expressed by drive power. In the mediating part, most suitable vehicle drive power was selected among the requests. In the modification part, the selected request is modified using a programmed powertrain model, which considers internal combustion engine condition and powertrain response and transmission's tolerance. In the distribution part, optimized engine torque and gear ratio are processed.

Strain and Motion Measurement for Piston, Piston Ring and Connecting Rod of High Speed Running Engines using New Digital Telemeter

The authors have developed a measurement technique equipped with new digital telemeter for strain, motion and temperature of engine parts under high speed running operation with high accuracy. This telemeter has an original signal processing method in which the sensor outputs are directly converted to digital signals without conventional amplifiers and A/D converters. This telemeter enables multipoint measurements at high engine speed in small gasoline engines because of its compactness and lightweight. And this enables long hours of engine test without concern over battery life because of its low power consumption and self-contained power generation. We applied new developed digital telemeter to several measurements and analysis on the piston, piston ring and connecting rod.

Quantitative Analysis of the Relation between Flame Structure and Turbulence in HCCI Combustion by Two-Dimensional Temperature Measurement

The structure of HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) combustion flames was quantitatively analyzed by measuring the two-dimensional gas temperature distribution using phosphor thermometry. It was found from the relation between a turbulent Reynolds number and Karlovitz number that, when compared with the flame propagation in an S.I. engine, HCCI combustion has a wider flame structure with respect to the turbulence scale. As a result of our experimentation for the influence of low temperature reaction (LTR) using two types of fuel, it was also confirmed that different types of fuel produce different histories of flame kernel structure.

Development of New Sports Shift Control System for Toyota's Automatic Transmission

Toyota has developed a new sports shift control system introduced in the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission (AA80E), which is implemented in the “LS 460” and has been adopted in the “IS F” (upcoming 2008 model). This enables the IS F to be a vehicle that also permits the enjoyment of driving on circuits as well as achieving that “fun-to-drive” image. In sports driving, as achieved by the conventional torque converter-type automatic transmissions, shift response performance for shift operation and linearity performance for accelerator operations were challenges to tackle. On the contrary, the newly developed sports shift control system has resolved these challenges and enables the IS F to be capable of responding to a driver's intention quickly and accurately, letting the driver truly experience satisfaction.

Effect of Hydrocarbon Molecular Structure on Diesel Exhaust Emissions Part 1: Comparison of Combustion and Exhaust Emission Characteristics among Representative Diesel Fuels

Combustion and exhaust emission characteristics were compared among three representative diesel fuels called “Base (corresponding to a Japanese market fuel)”, “Improved” and Swedish “Class-1” using both a modern small and an optically accessible single-cylinder DI diesel engines. In these tests, the relative amount of PM collected in the exhaust was “Base” >“Class-1” >“Improved” at almost all of the operating conditions. This means that “Class-1” generated more PM than “Improved”, even though “Class-1” has significantly lower distillation temperatures, aromatic content, sulfur, and density compared with “Improved”. There was little difference in combustion characteristics such as heat release rate pattern, mixture formation and flame development processes between these two fuels. However, it was found that “Class-1” contained more branches in the paraffin fraction and more naphthenes.

An Analysis of Behavior for 4WD Vehicle on 4WD-chassis Dynamometer

Technologies of 4WD chassis dynamometers (CHDY hereinafter) have advanced dramatically over the past several years, enabling 4WD vehicles to be tested without modifying their drive-train into 2WD. These advances have opened the use of 4WD-CHDY in all fuel economy and emission evaluation tests. In this paper, factors that influence the accuracy of fuel economy tests on 4WD CHDY are discussed. Fuel economy tests were conducted on 4WD CHDY and we found that most of the vehicle mechanical loss is the tire loss and that stabilizing the tire loss of the test vehicle is essential for the test reproducibility.

Impact Study of High Biodiesel Blends on Exhaust Emissions to Advanced Aftertreatment Systems

In Biodiesel Fuel Research Working Group(WG) of Japan Auto-Oil Program(JATOP), some impacts of high biodiesel blends have been investigated from the viewpoints of fuel properties, stability, emissions, exhaust aftertreatment systems, cold driveability, mixing in engine oils, durability/reliability and so on. In the impact on exhaust emissions, the impact of high biodiesel blends into diesel fuel on diesel emissions was evaluated. The wide variety of biodiesel blendstock, which included not only some kinds of fatty acid methyl esters(FAME) but also hydrofined biodiesel(HBD) and Fischer-Tropsch diesel fuel(FTD), were selected to evaluate. The main blend level evaluated was 5, 10 and 20% and the higher blend level over 20% was also evaluated in some tests. The main advanced technologies for exhaust aftertreatment systems were diesel particulate filter(DPF), Urea selective catalytic reduction (Urea-SCR) and the combination of DPF and NOx storage reduction catalyst(NSR).

Study of High Efficiency Zero-Emission Argon Circulated Hydrogen Engine

The potential of high efficiency zero-emission engines fueled by hydrogen, which is regarded as a promising form of energy for the future, is being researched. The argon circulated hydrogen engine [ 1 ] is one system theoretically capable of achieving both high efficiency and zero emissions, and its feasibility for use in vehicles has been studied. Specifically, tests were performed to verify the following issues. It was examined whether stable hydrogen combustion could be achieved under an atmosphere of argon and oxygen, which has a high specific heat ratio, and whether the substantial thermal efficiency improvement effect of the argon working gas could be achieved. An argon circulation system was also studied whereby steam, which is the combustion product of the hydrogen and oxygen emitted from the engine, is separated by condensation to enable the remaining argon to be re-used.
